According to the Harless Association there is NO CREST for the Harless Line. ORIGIN OF THE NAME HARLESS:In the good old days people had only one name, such as Adam, Noah, Abraham, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, etc. Then it became desirable and even necessary to have a Christian name and a surname (family name). Most family names mean something. Would you like to know the meaning of the name HARLESS? The name Harless, in its various ways of spelling, such as Harles,Herles, Harlis, Haarlass, etc., are all derived from the High German word Hornisse, which in English means hornet. From now on, each of you can use your Imagination wondering why our ancesor chose that name. It may be that our ancestor is Haman Harlas, who is recorded as being in Heidelburg in 1399. There is an ancient hotel in Heidelburg named the HAARLASS. Frank and Agatha Harless were guests at that hotel not long ago. Then name Harless with its various spellings is quite common in Germany. Most promeinent men of the name are mentioned in the literature. Heidelburg is not far from Germersheim, where John Philip Harless was born. Taken from THE HARLESS FAMILY BULLETIN March 1963 Vol. 1, No. 2 Submitted by Kathy Lynn

GENERAL HARLESS, CHIEF OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS, DIES IN HOSPITAL HERE Survivors of Souths Army in County Reduced to Four Brig.-Gen. N.B. Harless, honorary commander-in-chief of the United Confederate Veterans, died at 10:45 a.m. today in Methodist Hospital. He was 93. With his death the number of Confederate veterans living in Houston dwindled to four. General Harless had been in good health until a few days ago when he suffered a heart attack. Only last week he and his comrades were guests of honor at a dinner given by the Womens City Club. General Harless, who became one of Houstons most beloved figures, was born in New Hope, Ala., April 27, 1845, the son of Thomas and Ellen Ellison Harless. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was to young for enlistment but took up arms and fought in the ranks in spite of his youth. On Jan. 1, 1862, after almost two years of active service, he was officially enlisted in Company H. Forty-ninth Regiment at Huntsville, Ala. He served throughout the remainder of the war and fought in many of the more important battles. At the close of the war he returned to Alabama and in 1870 came to Texas by boat to make his home. He settled first at Chapel Hill, where he was employed by John K. Carlisle, a Planter and former Confederate soldier. He later moved to Nevada, Texas, and in 1906 came to Houston to make his home with his son, Ben F. Harless. For some time prior to his retirement he was associated with Bering & Cortes, Hardware Company and later with his son in the jewelry business. Important recognition for his service during the war came to General Harless some years ago when he was chosen commander of the Dick Dowling Camp, U. C. V. He later was chosen commander of the Texas Division of the U.C.V. and then elevated to the position of commander of the Trans-Mississippi Division. He held this command until last autumn, when he was chosen honorary Confederate commander for life at the Confederate Veterans reunion in Columbia, S.C. This command has been held by only two other persons. General Harless attended practically every Confederate reunion that was held. He participated actively in the last reunion at Columbia that was attended by less than 250 former Southern soldiers whose ages ranged from 90 to 105. Only a few months prior to that time he had achieved one of his greatest ambitions by attending the reunion of Confederate and Northern soldiers at Gettysburg. He had anticipated attending another reunion next year and only a short while ago expressed the belief that there will be a Confederate reunion as long as there are two Confederate soldiers left. HIS BEST LISTENER Remarkably alert for his age, General Harless liked nothing better than to spin yarns of his war days. One of his best listeners was Gen. John Shearer, former member of the Grand Army of the Republic. General Harless was deeply interested in all patriotic and civic celebrations and always attended such affairs in his beloved gray uniform. Springfield, Ill, Journal 1/4/1939 WEEPS AT BIER OF CIVIL WAR ENEMY Houston, Tex, Jan 3. An old soldier of the north, John Shearer, 91, who marched to the sea with General Sherman, marched tonight to the bier of N. B. Harless, 92, an old soldier of the south, and wept. Pledged to kill each other in their teens, they came to the sunset of life as warm friends. Harless, a private in the Confederate army, but eventually a general commanding the trans-Mississippi department of the gray-clad veterans, died today of a heart ailment. Shearer, the last man of the army of the north still living in Houston, said, We fought each other at Vicksburg, but that was a long, long time ago. Today we were like brothers. He was a fine and brave old man. Submitted by Misty

National Geographic June 1983 issue. The article is good times and bad in coal country. Picture is Jesse Harless of Martin County, KY having his oxygen fixed from black lung. BREATH OF LIFE for a victim of black lung, an oxygen tube is fitted to retired miner Jesse Harless by Daniel Morikone of Martin County Home Health Care, Inc. Black lung, or pneumoconiosis caused by decades of exposure to coal-mine dust, has killed many thousands of miners, but eventually the incidence of the disease is expected to decline greatly with dust controls imposed by the federal government in 1969. Harless, who lives by himself, keeps the pistol for protection. The rifle is owned by his son. Harless also relies on Grizzly, his huge black dog. A stranger here would get his leg took off, he says. The insurance man wont get out of his car. A.A. (Augustus) Harless, Margaret Jane (Hayes)Hesson Harless, Margarets daughter Augusta standing behind her. The other lady is an unknown friend of Augustas. Augusta was born 1-1-1883 and married Elisha Ellis in 1906. Margaret Jane Hayes Hesson married Augustus Harless on 9-3-1905. Augusta Hessons married 4-7-1906 and moved to Indianapolis, Indiana sometime shortly thereafter. Therefore, I believe this picture might have even been their wedding picture of the day, since Margaret Jane has on gloves and seems to be dressed up. It was made somewhere between September 1905 and April 1906, I would guess. Augustus S/O Jacob Harless & Elsy/Elcy Emmons. Submitter is the Granddaughter of Margaret Jane Hesson Harless through her youngest daughter Ethel L. Hesson Brafford. Submitted by Juanita Barr (jbarr2277@webtv.net)
