Anne Gertrude McAnally Harless wife of Loyd Wesley Harless. Gertrude McAnally was born in 1879 in Hymera, Indiana, and went west to South Dakota to homestead and teach school. Her homestead was in Gregory County near Dixon, but her first school was in Anoka, Nebraska. She came back on weekends to her claim shanty. The next year she taught school near her homestead in a little shack. When her new school house was built, she and the big boys of the school loaded the benches, the stove and the books into Teachers Buggy and moved into the school house. The books were all different. Each pupil brought what he had. Some of the pupils were of Bohemian background and did not speak English. By the next year, another school opened a few miles away and a young man from West Virginia was the teacher. Loyd Harless had a four mile walk to court Gertrude. By the next year they were married, and they raised a family of eight children. Submitted by Roxy McCoy (roxal@tstar.net)

Select photoThis is a piece of Coverlid that Elena Ann Williams WEAVED in 1865. Loyds sister Mary brought it to Loyd and they ended up cutting it up in equal pieces so each kid would have a piece of it. (Which is a crying shame- since it probably would be worth about 6,000.00 according to my mom.) But it is nice to own something which your great grandmother made even if it is a small piece. COURTESY OF DAVID HARLESS: Davids mom and dad are Tom Harless (son of Ralph , son of Loyd son of Leeroy married to Elena Ann who weaved this piece.) Toms wife Margaret Frison Harless discovered that the name of the weaving pattern is: "FREEMASONS COAT OF ARMS" and /or "King"s Flower". It appears to be made of Handspun , hand dyed (indigo dye) wool and handspoun linen. It is blue and white with this interesting pattern of little "Squares" that also look a bit like flowers.
